The group came together on Sunday in a “spontaneous response” to the detainees’ strike that was declared two weeks ago, according to organizers.
“We mainly have two reasons: to support the prisoners and raise their morale [in continuing their hunger strike] and to raise awareness of the Palestinian political detainees,” organizer Muhannad Abu-Gosh told Al Jazeera.
Israel Prison Service said in a statement on Sunday that around 50 prisoners began an open-ended hunger strike on September 27.
Other prisoners have since joined them to protest the Israeli regime’s policy of solitary confinement and the bad living conditions, bringing the number to 234.
In June, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he intends to make conditions tougher for Palestinian prisoners.
Currently, there are some 7,000 Palestinians held in Israeli prisons.
The prisoners held in Israeli detention camps are often subjected to lengthy solitary confinements, sudden night raids and torture.
