URGENT | June 14, 2012 | 20 children started hunger strike in Israeli prison
Two leading charities called on Wednesday for Israel to give proper medical treatment to a hunger striker in an Israeli jail, warning that his health is deteriorating rapidly.
Prisoners’ rights charity Addameer and Physicians for Human Rights-Israel (PHR-Israel) said Akram Rikhawi, who is on the 70th day of his hunger strike, faces an “imminent threat to his life.”
A joint statement from the group said a lawyer had visited Rikhawi on Tuesday, but independent doctors had not had access to him for two weeks.
A doctor from PHR-Israel warned that “Akram is at immediate risk of death, due to the combination of his protracted hunger strike and his prior chronic conditions, including diabetes and asthma.”
It added that Rikhawi was “extremely tired and weak and now weighs only 49 kilos.”
Rikhawi’s wife told Al-Akhbar that they had heard his condition was deteriorating fast, but he had been prevented from calling his family.
“There is a new appeal but he has major health problems, his sugar levels are dropping,” she said. “We have not heard anything from him.”
