Human Rights Watch: Israel violated laws of war in eight-day attacks on Gaza

The Human Rights Watch (HRW) says the Israeli Army committed clear violations of the laws of war during its recent eight-day attacks on the besieged Gaza Strip.

The charges came in a report which the rights organization published on Friday with regards to an Israeli airstrike on a residential building in Gaza on November 18, which killed at least 12 Palestinians, including women and children.

“Attacks in which the expected civilian loss exceeds the anticipated military gain are serious violations of the laws of war,” HRW said in the report.

The November 18 attack, targeting the home of an al-Dallu family, was Israel’s bloodiest assault in its eight-day offensive against the Gaza Strip. At the time, the Israeli military claimed that the strike had targeted a Hamas member responsible for firing rockets into Israel without saying whether he was inside the building belonging to the al-Dallu family.

As a result of the attack, ten members of the al-Dallu family along with two neighbors were killed. One of those killed was a low-ranking police officer.

“Israel needs to explain why it bombed this house filled with civilians,” said Fred Abrahams, a special adviser at HRW who conducted research in Gaza. “Anyone who violated the law should be appropriately punished.”

Over 160 Palestinians, including women and children, were killed and about 1,200 others were injured in the Israeli attacks on Gaza from November 14-21. In retaliation, Palestinian resistance fighters fired rockets and missiles into Israeli cities, killing at least five Israelis.

The violence ended after the Israeli regime and the Palestinian resistance movement, Hamas, agreed to an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire.

* The list of shuhada does not display, the numerous victims of the zionist occupation which are undocumented by media. Nor it displays the victims of the “silent onslaught” due to restrictions of movement, ability to go to hospitals for treatment or life saving surgery, due to lack of medication because of the blockades and so on. Neither does this list, display the avoidable mortality. A clear and statistical factual evidence, about the number of deaths due to indecent ruling by occupation forces. For even an occupier has obligations under International Laws, Geneva Convention and the Hague regulations, which it is neglecting. These circumstances, together with deliberate policies of the occupier to neglect and even deny every basic human right, severes avoidable mortality which is totally silenced by media or reporting organisations. While in the Holocaust, 1 on 6 Jewish people directly died of deliberate neglect, so if we believe the facts over 1 million due to avoidable mortality, neither should these same circumstances be ignores which are ongoing in Palestine. For this report displays a avoidable morality of at least 0,5 million Palestinians.

How many more dead corpses of Palestinians does the international community need to see in order to act? How many more cruelties and violations of Human Rights, Regulations and International Law will be needed to intervene so this ongoing warcrime is being stopped once and for all.
