GAZA, (PIC)– Tawfiq Abu Naeem, head of the Palestinian Prisoners Association, called on Palestinian factions to raise the prisoners’ issue to the Egyptian authorities again to end their suffering inside the Israeli prison.
Abu Naim told the PIC reporter that the prisoners’ issue should not be forgotten, calling on the Palestinian prisoners to shed light on their issue during a meeting with Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi and Egyptian intelligence.
He explained that the prisoners association sent several letters recently to the Egyptian President and intelligence, including letters from Israeli prisons through the Palestinian delegations discussing reconciliation between Fatah and Hamas.
He explained that the association is waiting for the right opportunity to launch a new prisoners’ strike, following the al-Karama battle during which they gained many achievements, however they were not implemented till now, where there are still prisoners in solitary confinement such as Awadh Saidi and Dirar Abu Sisi.
He pointed out that the occupation works to undermine al-Karama strike’s achievements, saying that the prisoners’ battle is still continuing.
He pointed out that the continued popular protests and solidarity sit-ins to support the prisoners’ issue are met with a passive position from the human rights and humanitarian organizations.
Abu Naim stressed the need to stop the Israeli violations in occupation prisons, especially after the death of the liberated prisoner Ashraf Abu Thre’a as a result of medical negligence in Israeli jails.
Regarding Abu Thre’a's martyrdom, Abu Naim held the Israeli occupation responsible for his death after spending 6 years in Israeli jails without medical treatment or care.
He pointed out that the Israeli doctors in occupation prisons have known previously that Ashraf will die soon.
Despite his catastrophic health condition, the jailer insisted to remain his hands and legs tied while he was in the hospital till his release after 6 years, where he went into a coma for two months before dying.
He emphasized that this is a deliberate crime carried out by the Israeli authorities.

“On Torture” is an edited volume of essays by Palestinian, Israeli and international legal and medical experts and practitioners based on presentations that they gave during a workshop held in Jerusalem in April 2011 entitled, “Securing Accountability for Torture and Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment (CIDT) in Israel: New Trends and Comparative Lessons”.
The essayists explore the history of torture in Israel, the daily challenges that practitioners face in seeking accountability for torture and CIDT in Israel, and the changing face of torture.
