Palestinian political prisoner, Ayman Sharawna, resumed his open ended hunger strike, that he suspended less than a month ago, due to a very serious health deterioration and while awaiting trial. Sharawna went on a 162-day hunger strike demanding his release.
Palestinian Minister of Detainees, Issa Qaraqe’, stated on Tuesday evening that Sharawna decided to resume his hunger strike due to the fact that Israel is deliberately delaying the deliberations in Sharawna’s case, especially since he is being held without charges.
Sharawna was one of the detainees who were released by Israel under the prisoner swap deal that secured the release of Israeli corporal, Gilad Shalit, in return for the release of over a thousand Palestinian detainees. He was first taken prisoner in 2002 and was sentenced to 38 years
Protesting his arrest, and his detention without charges, Sharawna stated his open-ended hunger strike demanding his immediate and unconditional release.

“On Torture” is an edited volume of essays by Palestinian, Israeli and international legal and medical experts and practitioners based on presentations that they gave during a workshop held in Jerusalem in April 2011 entitled, “Securing Accountability for Torture and Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment (CIDT) in Israel: New Trends and Comparative Lessons”.
The essayists explore the history of torture in Israel, the daily challenges that practitioners face in seeking accountability for torture and CIDT in Israel, and the changing face of torture.
