In some very disappointing news one can read United Nations Relief and Works Agency has cancelled a sports marathon planned to take place on April 10 allegedly due to objections of the Gaza government of women taking part in the “races”.

In a brief statement it had informed UNRWA that the marathon could be organized but in line with restrictions related to “the customs and traditions of the Palestinian people.”

After the whole of Palestine cheered for Woroud Sawalha to defend the National pride at the latest Olympics it seems “racing” which has been favorite even by the Prophet SAWS and his wife Aisha RA is no longer of the Sunnah and traditions killed the way of the sahaba.

Aisha (ra) fondly recalls memories of racing with the Prophet and even winning the race when she was young and fit
[Ibn Al Jawzy 68]

They enjoyed these races so much that the couple even raced on their way to the Battle of Badr which was one of the most important battles in the Islamic history.

Aisha (RA) reported that when she went on a journey with the Prophet (Saws), she challenged him to a race and won. Later, when she had gained weight, she raced him again, but this time he won, and he told her, “This is for that”.
[Hadith, Sahih narrated by Ahmed and Abu Dawud]

I sincerely express my hope the brothers and sisters worried about the mixing of sexes oversee the prejudices of traditions and overcome the bida’h of such.

There is only one track. For all Muslims, men and women: The one of the Sunnah.

May Allaah Subhana wa Ta’ala guide us all. Ameen.
