BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Fatah Central Committee member Mohammad Dahlan said Saturday that Israel had chosen extremism over peace after failing to extend a 10-month settlement freeze, a move that could lead to the collapse of peace talks.

Speaking with Ma’an radio, Dahlan said Israel was “in an embarrassing situation” for failing to accept calls for the EU and US on extending its 10-month moratorium for two months.

“The world should take responsibility toward the Palestinian cause after revealing the real face of a government that rejects peace and goes for extremism,” he said.

The Fatah official further called on Hamas to support the PLO’s decision to stop talks on Saturday and pursue “alternatives” in light of Israel’s “arrogant stance” on refusing to halt settlement construction.

Concerning President Mahmoud Abbas’ speech that he will give at an extraordinary Arab League session later this week, Dahlan said the president would announce his resignation.
