GAZA CITY (Ma’an) — Hamas said Saturday it considered the PLO Executive Committee’s decision to stop direct negotiations with Israel over settlement construction a step toward national reconciliation with the Islamist movement, applauding the move.

Senior Hamas leader Salah Al-Bardawil told reporters Saturday that “Hamas hopes Fatah will take a decision to stop negotiations, maintain its decision, pay more attention to the internal Palestinian situation, contribute to easing the siege imposed on the Gaza strip rather than supporting it.”

Al-Bardawil reiterated his movement’s stance that negotiations with Israel would lead to “nothing but more concessions and more haggling when it comes to Palestinian rights.”

In response to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s remarks that “moderate settlement construction will not harm negotiations,” the Hamas official warned of “Israeli terminology which aims to ornament Israeli doings.”

PLO Secretary-General Yasser Abed Rabbo said Saturday that PLO holds Israel responsible for “obstructing talks” after failing to extend a 10-month settlement moratorium on West Bank settlement construction, despite warnings that Palestinians would withdraw from talks over the issue.

President Mahmoud Abbas is set to meet with the Arab Peace Initiative committee on Friday to discuss negotiations with Israel and announce his stance.
