AMMAN, (PIC)– Jordan’s Royal Committee for Jerusalem Affairs (RCJA) warned of an Israeli plan to take full control of the area surrounding the Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.

The Israeli Haaretz newspaper revealed on Wednesday a wide ranging plan prepared by Israeli planning committees to renovate parts of Jerusalem’s Old City and open a new door in the city’s wall for the first time in 112 years.

RCJA Secretary General Abdullah Kanaan said in a press statement: “The occupation is working to carry out a policy of judaization of the holy city.”

The plans aim to “judaize and change the landmarks and identity of the holy city by wide ranging excavations, tourist and commercial projects, tunnels, and elevators above and below the Buraq plaza to connect it to the Silwan district,” Kanaan added.

The plan is intended to displace the residents of Jerusalem’s Silwan district around the Aqsa Mosque so Israeli authorities can take full geographic and demographic control of the surrounding area, he went on to explain.

Kanaan at the same time warned of plans to destroy the city’s Arab monuments and heritage and change the west front of the Aqsa Mosque towards the Buraq (Wailing) Wall and the Maghariba Gate.

“The plan, which will serve to distort the religious character of the Holy City, challenges international legal decisions.”
