Hamas: Arab decision insufficient

GAZA, (PIC)– Hamas said the decision by the Arab monitoring committee to withdraw from negotiations with Israel in light of the ongoing settlement activity is an insufficient step, asserting that the Palestinians and Arabs should take a stance to completely end the pointless peace talks.

“Giving the American administration another opportunity or another month to produce a change in Israel’s stance is pointless, and is only a waste of more time. The current negotiations confirmed the futility of betting on the U.S. administration, which was not able to stick to its positions, and continually backed down to the intransigence and arrogance of Netanyahu and his extremist government,” the group said in a statement on Saturday.

“Any other opportunity for the U.S. administration only means more American pressure against the Palestinian and Arab position and more guarantees and incentives from America to Israel,” it added.

The movement asserted that a complete stop should be placed on both direct and indirect negotiations and not only a pause.

Hamas called on the Palestinians and Arabs to adopt a strategy based on the resistance program that commits to national rights and unity of the Palestinians.

An Arab diplomat announced that the Arab monitoring committee decided to give the U.S administration an additional month to attempt to “revive” Palestinian-Israeli negotiations which were stalled because of continued settlement activity, before considering alternatives.

The diplomat, who preferred anonymity, said the decision voted on by Arab League members stated that the U.S. would be given the opportunity of one month to pave the way for resuming negotiations by interceding to hamper Israeli settlement activity.

The source added that the decision also states that the committee will re-gather in a month to discuss political alternatives if the efforts to resume peace talks failed.

The decision was released hours before the launch of a special Arab summit in the Libyan city of Sirte on Saturday after statements were ascribed to U.S. special envoy to the Mideast George Mitchell that Abbas and Netanyahu want to re-launch talks.

Hamas: Arab decision insufficient.
