RAMALLAH, (PIC)– The forum of Palestinian journalists (FPJ) strongly denounced the Palestinian Authority’s security apparatuses for arresting on Friday morning a number of journalists as they were covering the funeral procession of two resistance fighters assassinated by the Israeli occupation forces in Al-Khalil city.

Reporters from Al-Quds satellite channel and Pal Media were among the journalists who were arrested.

They prevented the journalists from taking pictures or airing the event and took them to the police station where their equipment was confiscated before they were transferred to the PA intelligence apparatus. There, their IDs were impounded and they were detained for hours but released later after the funeral ended.

The intelligence apparatus also summoned over the last two days journalist Ibrahim Al-Rantisi without leveling any charge against him.

The forum expressed its deep concern over these arrests and summonses and considered them a new violation against the freedom of opinion and expression, and the freedom of the press that are guaranteed by the Palestinian basic law and the international law.

It called on all media institutions, especially the Arab journalist union, the international federation of journalists, and reporters without borders to urgently intervene to stop the violations against journalists and the suppression of freedoms in the West Bank and work on getting them released from PA jails.

The PA security militias were redeployed throughout Al-Khalil city after they disappeared from the streets following the death of two resistance fighters affiliated with Al-Qassam Brigades, for fear of reactions from the citizens angry at what happened.

The armed militia men were seen roaming in the courtyards of mosques, especially in the area where the assassination took place and on roofs of some houses.

An atmosphere of widespread discontent is prevailing among the citizens because of the PA security militias’ involvement in the assassination of the two fighters. Many citizens described it as treason that cannot be erased with the passage of time.

In another development, the Israeli military radio said that the Israeli army removed the military observation point in Psagot settlement overlooking Ramallah city thanks to the security cooperation with the PA security apparatuses which imposed a state of calm in the vicinity of this settlement making its settlers feel safe.

The radio said on Saturday that the PA is working in cooperation with the Israeli army and the Shin Bet on fighting their common enemy, which is the Hamas Movement.
