GAZA CITY (Ma’an) — An Israeli airstrike northwest of Gaza City killed a Palestinian on Sunday morning and injured two others, a Gaza medical spokesman said.

Adham Abu Silmiyya said Mahmoud Jabir Washah, 21, was killed when Israel’s air force struck the As-Sudaniyya neighborhood near Gaza City. The injured, who were not identified, were transferred to the Kamal Udwan Hospital in northern Gaza, he added.

The Israeli army said the strike targeted “a squad of terror operatives who were preparing to fire rockets from the northern Gaza Strip into Israel,” a statement read.

Shortly after peace talks were relaunched in Washington on 2 September, the Israeli air force launched a series of airstrikes on Gaza, killing several. Gaza politicians have said they believed the increase in military action aimed at derailing both peace talks and ongoing Fatah-Hamas unity talks.

In early October, Israeli warplanes launched missiles targeting a car in central Gaza injuring three, medics reported.

The shelling targeted a car driving between Az-Zahra City and An-Nuseirat refugee camp, medics said, adding that three residents were transferred to Al-Aqsa Hospital in stable conditions.

An Israeli military spokeswoman said at the time the strikes were targeting Ahmad Al-Ashkar, who she said was a militant affiliated with the Red Eagles, an armed wing of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. Al-Ashkar was planning a terrorist attack against Israel, the spokeswoman said.
