GAZA, (PIC)– The international Lifeline-5 aid convoy carrying relief material aboard a Greek ship to the Gaza Strip sailed from the Syrian port of Latakia on Tuesday night en route to the Egyptian port of Al-Arish.

The convoy was given a populous send-off by massive crowds of Syrian and Palestinian citizens.

The ship would carry humanitarian, mainly medical, assistance along with vehicles and 30 solidarity activists after talks between the organizers and owner of the ship reached a deadlock over price of carrying all activists.

Official spokesman of the convoy Zaher Al-Beirawi said that the owner of the ship tried to blackmail them financially, and did not rule out foreign pressures on the owner.

The spokesman added that the remaining solidarity activists would leave by air on Wednesday from Latakia’s Al-Basel airport to Al-Arish airport.

PIC reporter said that Jordanians banned from entry into Egypt in this convoy have exerted last-ditch efforts to allow them to accompany the convoy into Gaza but with no success so far.
