BERLIN, (PIC)– German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle is to visit the Gaza Strip on Monday on an official visit, the first by a German official to the Strip since 2006.

The German foreign ministry said in a statement on Saturday that Westerwelle plans to take first hand information on means of improving living conditions in Gaza in his scheduled visit, “which would represent a moral boost to the Palestinian people in Gaza.”

However, a German political analyst described in a statement that the visit remains “incomplete” because the minister does not plan to meet with any of the Hamas leaders while he is slated to meet relatives of the Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit held by Palestinian resistance fighters in Gaza, in a bid to activate the German-mediated prisoners’ exchange deal.

The German diplomacy wishes to display its concern with the problems of Gaza such as the siege and the resultant suffering of its inhabitants, the analyst added.
