IDF second-in-command calls Gaza disengagement mistake
Jerusalem PostFormer IDF deputy chief of staff Dan Harel told Channel 2 in an interview on Saturday that the manner in which Israel undertook the disengagement from Gaza was a mistake.
Harel justified Israel’s territorial withdrawal from the Strip during the interview saying, "I’m not surprised that the Hamas’s power increased after disengagement." He continued, "In the past, I called [Gaza] Hamastan, today I say it is the epitome of Iran. There are 1.5 million Arabs in the Strip, and the question is do we want to be there or not – I, as a citizen, think we don’t need to be there."
However, Harel acknowledged that the manner in which the Israeli government undertook the disengagement did not bring the desired results.
"Based on past experience, unilateral steps like [the Gaza Disengagement] are mistakes," he added.
