Islamic Jihad urges national unity

GAZA CITY (Ma’an) — Islamic Jihad’s Secretary-General Ramadan Shallah on Friday urged Hamas and Fatah to work quickly to end their rivalry.

Shallah was speaking a ceremony in the Syrian capital to mark the 23rd anniversary of the founding of the Islamic Jihad movement.

Hamas and Fatah should agree on a national program to confont Israeli threats, Shallah said, noting that the crisis in the Palestinian situation could not be excluded from unity talks.

The Jihad official said the PLO, the body negotiating with Israel, must be restructured to represent all Palestinians and to restore its role for which it was established, to achieve liberation.

The only way to liberate Palestine was through resistance, Shallah said, adding that Islamic Jihad would not participate in any agreement which would exclude Palestinians’ rights to a homeland on 1967 borders.
