DAMASCUS, (PIC)– Success of the Hamas-Fatah meeting in Damascus on Tuesday hinges on Fatah’s ability to rid itself of American and Israeli interventions and conditions, Ezzet Al-Resheq, political bureau member of Hamas, said.

He told the PIC on Monday that Israel is pressuring Mahmoud Abbas (the de facto president of the PA), the PA, and Fatah so as not to reach an agreement on the security file, which makes things more difficult and the entire reconciliation hinged on those three parties’ ability to adopt a free, national decision away from Israeli dictates.

He hoped that the meeting would overcome the last obstacle before national reconciliation i.e. the security preparations.

Hamas MP Ismail Al-Ashqar arrived in Syria on Monday from Gaza to take part in the meeting. Ashqar is expected to head Hamas’s security delegation for the talks.

Meanwhile, advisor to the Israeli war minister on Arab affairs David Hakham told the Hebrew radio in an interview on Sunday that Abbas was not concerned with forging an agreement with Hamas.

He opined that the success chance of such reconciliation is very slim, adding that Abbas was exploiting the reconciliation issue to achieve political ends in his talks with Israel.

Resheq hopes Fatah would rid itself of foreign conditions.
