RAMALLAH, (PIC)– Hamas MPs denounced the Israeli government for its six month sentence of administrative detention imposed on senior Palestinian Legislative Council official Dr. Mahmoud Al-Ramahi, calling the decision a new crime against Palestine’s representative figures. PLC speaker Dr. Aziz Dweik said in an exclusive statement to the Palestinian Information Center on Friday: “At this time we can only appeal to politicians of the free world to stand by our representatives who (Israeli) occupation (authority) has been arresting while ignoring the immunity they enjoy as parliamentarians.” “PLC representatives are leaders who defend their people who are suffering under occupation.” MP Hamid Al-Beitawi condemned the Israeli Ofer military court verdict of six months in administrative prison against Ramahi, asserting that Israeli occupaiton authorities seek to break down the Palestinian parliament by arresting its members as well as preventing the PLC from passing laws and controlling the country’s treasury. “Israel is not bound by law,” Beitawi said in a statement on Friday. The Ahrar center for prisoners and human rights studies in Palestine said Ramahi’s detention was in violation of international norms, conventions, and laws. Ahrar center director Fouad Al-Khafsh noted that Ramahi was detained previously in 1992-1995 and in 2006-2009 while he was serving as a PLC member. PLC first deputy speaker Ahmed Al-Bahar called on Arab, Islamic, and international governments to intervene in Ramahi’s release. The PLC official said parliamentary officials the world over are now standing before a historic responsibility, and their duty as parliamentary leaders demands that they align with the elected representatives of the Palestinian people, who are exposed to violations by the Israeli occupation authorities. |
