DAMASCUS, (PIC)– Hamas strongly condemned the Israeli occupation forces’ (IOF) detention of MP Nayef Al-Rajoub in Al-Khalil earlier on Wednesday while holding 10 other Palestinian deputies locked up.

A responsible source in Hamas said in a press release that the renewed detention of the lawmaker, who was released from Israeli jail only five months ago after four years of incarceration, was a “sinful crime”.

It noted that the MP was the target of a security campaign on the part of Ramallah security militia to prevent him from preaching sermons in mosques.

The movement urged the Ramallah authority to desist from further security coordination with the IOF, and called on the human rights groups, parliaments, and free people of the world to intervene and pressure the Israeli occupation authority (IOA) into releasing the detained MPs.

For his part, Dr. Ahmed Bahar, the first deputy speaker of the Palestinian legislative council, who is currently visiting Algeria at the head of a parliamentary delegation, denounced the kidnap of MP Rajoub.

He charged that absenting Islamic deputies from the West Bank was a joint Israeli-Abbas interest.

The deputy speaker charged that both the IOA and Abbas’s authority were leading a hostile policy against Hamas and its deputies and their families in a bid to foil its parliamentary experiment and its political and national project.

Bahar asked the world parliaments to end their silence and to adopt clear stands in defense of the kidnapped Palestinian lawmakers.

He also called on the UN and the world community to adopt courageous stands and to punish and isolate Israel for its disregard of all international laws and agreements that prohibit detention of elected deputies of the people.
