OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, (PIC)– The committee of Jerusalem scholars and preachers called on the Arab and Islamic countries to hold a summit meeting to develop mechanisms to protect the Aqsa Mosque and confront the Israeli dangers threatening it.

In a statement on Tuesday, the committee said the Israeli official remarks about the possible collapse of the Aqsa Mosque is a real warning of the size of danger threatening the Mosque and its premises.

It added that the Israeli warnings reflect constant intentions to demolish the Aqsa Mosque and are aimed at testing the reaction of Palestinians, Muslims and Arabs.

The committee appealed to international institutions, especially the UNESCO to form a commission of independent architects and archaeologists to examine the structure of the Mosque and find out about Israeli claims about its imminent collapse.

In a related context, the permanent commission for the support of Jerusalem and Palestine held a news conference in Beirut on Tuesday with the participation of a number of Islamic and Arab figures.

Dean of the Lebanese press union Mohamed Baalbaki expressed his dismay at the absence of the Arab and Islamic role in defending Jerusalem, especially after Israel defied the international community and went too far in its violations against the holy city and its native people.

For his part, a spokesman for the grand Mufti of Lebanon Sheikh Mohamed Qabbani stressed the need for an Islamic unity to confront the Israeli Judaization schemes in the holy city, adding that slogans and speeches are not enough to achieve that.

Speeches in this regard were also delivered by a spokesman for head of the international union for Muslim scholars Sheikh Yousuf Al-Qaradawi, director of Al-Quds international institution Yassin Hammoud and head of the permanent commission for the support of Jerusalem and Palestine Sheikh Ahmed Al-Kurdi.

In a separate incident, Haaretz newspaper said Wednesday that the Israeli occupation authority (IOA) started lately to expand the hotel of Seven Arches located on the Mount of Olives east of Jerusalem, which is owned by the Jordanian royal family.

The newspaper added that the Israeli government already approved a plan to expand the hotel which is described as the most luxurious hotel in the holy city. Israel desisted over the past years from making any changes in the hotel in order to protect its diplomatic relations with Jordan.
