Ayhab Maqdad, the leader of the brigades, said the ceasefire was just one step in the direction of national reconciliation and a way to refuse Israel the impetus to start a new war on Gaza.

Maqdad told Al-Quds newspaper, “After careful consideration the Brigades decided in the interests of general reconciliation to officially announce a ceasefire with the Israeli side, to avoid our people being drawn into a new war.”

Maqdad called for the Palestinian factions Fatah and Hamas to unify, realize that the Israelis were planning to strike the Gaza Strip again, and avoid any such outcome.

Mahmoud Khalf, a member of the Central Committee of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, said that society was ready to close ranks and face the Israeli threat. He said Hamas and Fatah agreed on fundamental issues, like the natural right to defend the Palestinian people.

The prevailing atmosphere in Gaza, as people memorialize the destruction of two years ago, suggests that Israel is preparing for another war. Recent Israeli military drills around the Gaza Strip to preserve the “quiet” on the southern border have only exacerbated such fears.
