Jerusalem – PNN – A study released by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics indicates that the amount of Palestinians living in “historic Palestine”—meaning all territories taken by force in both 1948 and 1967—will equal the amount of Jews by the end of the year 2014.

According to the study, both populations will reach 6.1 million people by the end of 2014, as there are currently 5.5 million Palestinians and 5.7 million Jews, and Palestinians have a higher birth-rate. The study says that by 2020, Palestinians will outnumber Jews by 7.2 million to 6.7 million.

While the birth rate has been in decline in Palestine for the last ten years, it is still well above the average in Israel. In 1997, each woman had an average of 6 children while in 2007 that number was 4.6 (5.3 in the Gaza Strip and 4.1 in the West Bank), whereas in Israel is between 1.9 and 3.3 births per woman, depending on the predominance of Jewish Orthodox families in Israel. A 2009 figure put the Jewish Israeli fertility rate at 2.8 births per woman.

The mortality rate is also in decline in the Palestinian territories, producing what many analysts are calling a “demographic bomb” in Israel—soon the Jewish majority in control of Israel will become a minority, leaving the future uncertain and the word “apartheid” on the lips of many observers.

The West Bank accounts for 2.5 million Palestinians (45%); the Gaza Strip, 1.6 million (30%); and Israel, 1.4 million (25%). There are an estimated 11 million Palestinians in the world today, the majority of them refugees in other countries.

According to the study, “Of every 100 persons in the Palestinian Territory, about 44 are refugees, of whom 18 live in the West Bank and 26 in the Gaza Strip.”
