Israel arrested UK consulate staff

PressTV – Fri Jan 7, 2011 3:5PM

Israeli forces have arrested two UK consulate staff in East Jerusalem planning to fire a rocket at a football stadium, the UK Foreign Office has confirmed.

The two men are accused of helping in obtaining weapons for other members of their consulate behind the plot. However, their plan has been preceded only at the preliminary stage and no rockets were found neither.

Concerns have been raised about the inspections to be carried out at the consulate — located in the most political parts of Jerusalem.

In the international law, East Jerusalem is an occupied territory – the predominantly Arab area-and most countries do not recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

The home of the Beitar Jerusalem football team Teddy Stadium, is said to be the target of UK consulate staff to attack on, the Foreign Office spokesperson said.

Despite the fact the plan stayed at the planning stage, Israel’s security service Shin Bet said that two other members of the attack group were to carry out a rocket attack on the Teddy stadium.

The UK staff activities were carrying out a survey in the nearby hillside to observe the area and checking the best way to launch a rocket when the stadium seats becomes full, officials said.
