OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, (PIC)– Israeli bulldozers began razing Sunday morning the Shepherd Hotel in Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah suburb amid a plan to replace the structure with a Jewish settlement and isolate two Palestinian neighborhoods.

The Israeli left-wing rights group Peace Now disclosed in June 2010 the beginnings of the construction of 20 settler homes in place of the Shepherd Hotel.

Peace Now said the move was part of a larger plan to eject the Palestinians from Sheikh Jarrrah and erect a Jewish settlement on the ruins of once-Arab homes there. The plan includes isolating the district by creating a settlement belt around it and isolating Jerusalem’s Old City from surrounding areas.

The Shepherd Hotel, owned originally by Jerusalem Mufti Ameen al-Husseini, was claimed by Israel’s Custodian of Absentee Property who sold it to American millionaire Irving Moscovich, nicknamed the godfather of settlements. Moscovich in turn transferred the hotel’s rights to Otairt Cohanim, an association with a keen interest in promoting Jewish settlements.
