Israel wants more pressure on Hamas

PressTV – Mon Jan 10, 2011 1:49AM

Israel had lined up tanks and armored personnel carriers during its “Operation Cast Lead” on the Gaza Strip.
Right wing ministers in the Israeli cabinet have called for more pressure against the Palestinian resistance movement of Hamas.

Cabinet member Uzi Landau, a veteran hawk from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party, said on Sunday that the situation will deteriorate unless Israel considers a policy of zero tolerance.

He also described the condition in Gaza as intolerable for Israel and called for tough military action against Palestinians in the coastal enclave.

The comments came despite weeks of Israeli airstrikes and artillery fire that have killed dozens of Palestinians.

A number of Israeli ministers have recently called for a repeat of the Gaza War.

Israel launched “Operation Cast Lead” on December 27, 2008.

The 22-day war killed at least 1,400 Palestinians and left thousands of others displaced and inflicted over $1.6 billion in damage.

Director of the Police Explosives Engineering Department in Gaza Major Tahseen Saad said that Israeli army dropped more than 3,000 tons of munitions containing incendiary materials on the Gaza Strip during its three-week onslaught.

Israel has continued to close all border crossings to the Gaza Strip for more than 3 years now.

Some 1.5 million people are being denied from their basic rights, including freedom of movement, and their rights to appropriate living conditions, work, health and education.
