The UK-based telecommunications company, which has long professed a commitment to upholding human rights and ethical business practices, has allowed the Israeli company, Bezeq, to join its exclusive alliance program, affording preferential access to its products and services.
Bezeq provides telecommunications support for Israel’s illegal settlements in Palestinian lands.
Peace activists in London have now launched a campaign against the company, Press TV reported.
The Palestinian Solidarity campaign led over a thousand people to complain directly to BT on Wednesday, calling on the company to end its business ventures in the Israeli settlements.
Thousands of BT employees are part of the Communication Workers’ Union, which is known for its opposition to the Israeli occupation.
BT, however, says its commitment to dialogue and ethical business in conflict zones remains uncompromised.
The Israeli settlement activities are illegal under the Fourth Geneva Convention, which forbids population transfer into territories occupied in war.
Israel seized East al-Quds, along with the West Bank, from Jordan in the Six-Day War of 1967, and later annexed it in defiance of calls from the international community.
Israel’s refusal to halt settlement construction in the occupied lands, once again brought to halt direct talks with the Palestinian Authority.
Palestinians have demanded that Israel freeze settlement construction, arguing that the continuation of settlement activities reduces the chance of establishing an independent Palestinian state.
