Israel Investigation Says Gaza Flotilla Raid Legal

After seven months, the Turkel Commission has issued its report, saying that the raid on a Gaza-bound flotilla of aid ships that killed nine people last May was legal. The soldiers acted in self-defense, according to the report issued Sunday that also said the naval blockade of Gaza was legal under international law. Although it did offer some criticism, the report was a stark contrast to a UN investigation that found Israeli forces had acted with an “unacceptable level of brutality.” The BBC’s Jon Donnison says most of Israel’s critics will simply “see it as a whitewash.” There is more to come from the commission that is set to investigate what kind of intelligence Israel had available before it decided to carry out the raid.
