Turkey unveiled on Monday details of its own report into the Israeli raid on the Gaza-bound Turkish ship, the Mavi Marmara.

The report came a day after Israel published their report into the incident surrounding the takeover of the main vessel in the Gaza flotilla on May 31, 2010. Turkey’s findings are largely contradictory with those brought forward by Israeli investigators, bringing about heated words between the two countries, according to Reuters.

The fleet of six ships attempting to break through Israel’s blockade of the Gaza Strip ignored orders to turn back, and consequently, nine Turks were killed in a skirmish aboard the ship.

Turkey’s report detailed that two of the activists killed on board were shot from the military helicopter from which the Israeli commandos descended.

“The Israeli soldiers shot from the helicopter onto the Mavi Marmara using live ammunition and killing two passengers before any Israeli soldier descended on the deck,” said the report published by state-run news agency Anatolian as quoted by Reuters.
“During the attack, excessive, indiscriminate and disproportionate force was used by the Israeli soldiers against the civilians on board,” it said.

Israeli investigators said that the commandos were attacked by passengers once they boarded the ship, resulting in the loss of life.

Turkey said its own report had found that Israel’s blockade of the territory and attack against what they call a humanitarian aid ship violated international law. Israel’s report said that it acted within the bounds of international law in view of security circumstances and its efforts to fulfill its “humanitarian obligations,” and the human loss and physical injuries were merely “regrettable consequences.”
