Cyprus recognized Palestine as an independent state on the lands that Israel has occupied in 1967, official Palestinian news agency, Wafa, reported Sunday.

Wafa said that President of Cyprus Demetris Christofias sent a letter to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas informing him about the recognition.

In the message, Christofias added that he hopes that the Palestinian leadership and Israel reach a peace deal enabling the creation of a Palestinian state with its capital in East Jerusalem.

Cyprus also sees that Jewish settlement forms an obstacle on the way of peace. The Palestinians walk out of peace negotiations in September, protesting the resumption of construction in West Bank settlement.

Over the past few weeks, nine Latin America countries recognized Palestine as an independent state comprising the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Israel opposes the recognitions, considering them unilateral moves. Washington also stresses that the Palestinian state should be a result of a negotiated agreement.
