NABLUS, (PIC)– A report issued by the Tadhamon (Solidarity) human rights group says Israel leveled 27 structures in the West Bank during January. That includes entire villages in the Negev and Jodan Valley, the Shepherd Hotel in East Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah district and a school in Al-Khalil. The demolitions left hundreds of Palestinians homeless, the report documents. According to the report, Israeli authorities frequently used security concerns as a pretense before proceeding to tear down homes. More commonly, they said the targeted homes were built without permit, the report says. Planning departments have closed doors to Palestinians causing overcrowding and prompting a natural increase in construction, while obtaining a building permit can be very complicated. Another pretense used for the string of demolitions is that houses built on unchartered villages are illegal as is the case of several towns in the Jordan Valley and Negev desert. Four homes were leveled in Jerusalem that month, including an Arab-owned hotel to be replaced by a new settlement community. Dozens of notices were handed out daily in Palestinian neighborhoods by Israeli authorities. It is suspected that the demolitions are intended to displace the indigenous Arabs across West Bank cities. |
