Dweik: Elections not legitimate, deepen division

AL-KHALIL, (PIC)– Speaker of the Palestinian legislative council Dr. Aziz Dweik has said that the legislative and presidential elections called for by de facto president Mahmoud Abbas would only deepen the rift between Hamas and Fatah.

Dweik, speaking in an interview with Al-Quds satellite channel on Monday night, said that such elections should take place in accordance with national consensus, describing the Abbas call as “illegitimate”.

The speaker expressed readiness to accompany Abbas, who is also Fatah leader, on a visit to Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip to furnish the way before ending division, make direct contacts with Hamas, and get acquainted with the conditions in Gaza, which has been under tight siege for four years.
