GAZA CITY (Ma’an) — A top aide to Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh in Gaza said Thursday that the uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia would free the Palestinian cause out of the grip of America and Israel.

Yousef Rezqa told a group of journalists that both Palestinian governments should respect the youth movements planning demonstrations across the occupied territories “because they represent the spirit of the nation.”

He also touched on the leaked Palestinian peace talks documents scandal. The resignation of the chief PLO negotiator this week suggested the documents were real and that Palestinian policies needed reform. Rezqa urged Abbas to “distance himself from these documents.”

He reiterated his government’s refusal to hold elections, saying there was strong opposition to the vote.

The Palestinian Authority’s decision to hold elections is public relations, he said. They are attempting to stay in power, fearful of the change across Egypt in Tunisia, he said. Rezqa also urged PLO reforms.

Concerning the resignation of Salam Fayyad’s government, Rezqa said it would bring nothing new. The past government offered little and the next one is simply a change of faces, not policies, he said.
