Hamas: Sudden Fatah reconciliation calls need backing on ground

GAZA, (PIC)– The Hamas resistance movement in Gaza is demanding that sudden reconciliation calls by senior Palestinian official Nabil Shaath are backed by practical steps.

The party suspects the statements, as well as decisions to hold elections and the entire cabinet resignation, were motivated by the Palestinian Authority’s loss of popularity following leaked documents detailing major concessions offered to Israel.

“Shaath’s statements have no meaning in light of continued arrests and torture in Fatah’s prisons in the West Bank,” Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said Monday in a press statement.

He insisted the ”true key” to reconciliation was to cease arrests, to free detained Hamas affiliates and allow the party’s charity organizations to resume services to the Palestinians.

Forming a unity government must come as a comprehensive national solution not a partial one, Abu Zuhri said, adding that Shaath’s statements were should have represented an official Fatah position, as they conflict with statements from other party leaders.

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum called the move ”no more than media bubbles.”

“It is clear that there is confusion inside the Fatah arena on talks about reconciliation, as we only see the talks via the media without formal contact with Hamas,” he told our correspondent. ”This raises doubts to the credibility of what is said until this moment.”

He pointed out that Fatah reconciliation talks abounded after Al-Jazeera leaked documents revealing Palestinian negotiators were willing to compromise unprecedented amounts of land, and after the U.S. used its veto power to shoot down a resolution condemning West Bank settlement construction, and following the shame-inspired resignation of Saeb Erekat.

“Nabil Shaath’s statements and media initiatives conflict entirely with what is happening on the ground in the West Bank,” Barhoum said.

He emphasized that Hamas remains keen on achieving national reconciliation. ”We want genuine reconciliation ensuring true partnership…not just media maneuvers”.
