Sheikh Saleh arrested, detained overnight to appear in court at 9am

Jerusalem (SILWANIC) — The detention of Sheikh Raed Saleh, head of the Islamic movement in Israel, was extended by the Israeli courts yesterday until today, 23 February. Sheikh Saleh will appear in the Israeli Magistrates Court at 9am this morning, after he was arrested yesterday at noon by Israeli police when his vehicle was intercepted in Sheikh Jarrah, East Jerusalem. Saleh had been participating in a festival staged by the people of Silwan in honor of the second anniversary of the establishment of the Bustan protest tent. Israeli police have claimed that Sheikh Saleh was arrested on suspicion of burning woodland in the Negev region.
Sheikh Saleh’s lawyer Khaled Zabarqa denounced the method of his client’s arrest as essentially illegal abduction, designed to create an atmosphere of fear and to intimidate his client.
Sheikh Saleh is currently detained in Muskubiya Prison in West Jerusalem until the time of his hearing
