GAZA CITY (Ma’an) — The Gaza-based Al-Mezan Center for Human Rights reminded Palestinian governments Monday of the right to freedom of assembly under the Palestinian legal code, ahead of planned demonstrations in the West Bank and Gaza.

“Force must not be used against peaceful assemblies and participants apart from in some very limited situations as stated in the law; in which case the police and security forces must fully respect the principles of proportion and necessity principles,” the statement said.

It added a call to “the Ramallah and Gaza Governments to fully respect and enhance the right to peaceful assembly,” but warned Palestinians and political parties to “respect the limitations of the Palestinian Public Meeting Law,” under which freedom of assembly is guaranteed.
