UN’s Serry backs Abbas trip to Gaza

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — The UN’s envoy to the Middle East threw his support Wednesday behind President Mahmoud Abbas’ statement that he would go to the Gaza Strip to reconcile with its Hamas rulers.

“I very much welcome this development and hope that President Abbas’ visit to Gaza will happen soon,” Robert Serry said in a statement issued by his spokesman. “I think it is very important that the leaders respond to the clear wish of the people to reunite. Unity is overdue and vital for Palestinian legitimate aspirations.”
