Abu Rudaineh calls on Hamas to accept Abbas’ offer

March 26, 2011

RAMALLAH (Ma’an) — Presidential spokesman Nabil Abu Rudaineh on Saturday urged Hamas to approve President Mahmoud Abbas’ initiative to restore national unity.

Abbas accepted an invitation from Gaza premier Ismail Haniyeh to visit the Gaza Strip in the midst of massive youth protests demanding an end to the division between the Hamas-run Gaza government and the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority in the West Bank.

However, the president said he would not visit Gaza to hold further talks, but rather to form an interim unity government to prepare for elections.

Abu Rudaineh urged Hamas to put national interests above partisan concerns and to accept the offer. He said the initiative had the support of the people, as well as national, regional and international figures.

The Arab League, Islamic Conference, United Nations, European Union, Russia and Qatar all supported Abbas’ plan, and viewed it as a way to end the internal crisis caused by the political divide, the Fatah official added.
