Protest tent in Ramallah square vandalized

March 31, 2011

RAMALLAH (Ma’an) — A group of Palestinians attacked a protest tent in Ramallah on Wednesday and burned books that were in it leading to fist fights among the youth.

One of the March 15 protesters told Ma’an the police were in the area and intervened to stop the attackers. Police also helped the protesters set up the tent again in Manara.

A sleeping bag, first aid kit and 30 books were stolen in the attack by “Fatah thugs,” activists said. The incident occurred just after Fatah won the nearby Birzeit University’s student senate election.

The governor of Ramallah and Al-Bireh, Laila Ghanam, said she was in Manara and stressed that the incident had been resolved but that investigations were ongoing to punish those responsible.

She said those who caused the problem were individuals and their actions were irresponsible. She said police were in Manara since March 15 to protect the protesters according to instructions from the president.

Also Wednesday, Palestinian security forces stopped protesters from reaching the illegal Beit El settlement and confiscated a camera, activists said. They were later released.
