Israel releases Palestinian teen ill with cancer

Apr 4, 2011

RAMALLAH (Ma’an) — Israeli authorities on Monday released a teenage Palestinian detainee diagnosed with cancer, Palestinian Authority officials said.

Mustafa Shehab Abdul Wahhad, 16, was detained by Israeli forces in February. Medics said malignant tumors in his chest grew during his detention in Ofer prison, in a military base near Ramallah.

Abdul Wahhad, from Abwein village north of Ramallah, was accused of throwing stones at Israeli settlers.

Lawyers from the Palestinian Authority Ministry of Detainees lodged an urgent request for Abdul Wahhad’s release in Israeli courts on the grounds that he has cancer and needs medical attention.

On his release, the teenager was taken to the Ash-Sheikh Zayed hospital in Ramallah for treatment.

PA Minister of Detainees’ Affairs Issa Qaraqe welcomed Abdul Wahhad on his release from prison.
