JERUSALEM, May 14, 2011 (WAFA) – Israeli police assaulted late Friday night one of Al-Aqsa Mosque guards in Jerusalem’s old city, Saturday said Muslim Waqf officials.

The police brutally beat Muhannad Idris, who was on duty at the Mosque, and who had to be transferred to hospital for treatment. Waqf director, Azzam Khatib, strongly denounced the assault.

Israeli police had been keeping heavy presence in and around Al-Aqsa Mosque since late Thursday night in anticipation of Nakba Day protests.

While the Friday prayers ended peacefully at Al-Aqsa Mosque, where number of Muslim worshippers was restricted by Israeli police to men over 45 years of age, clashes did take place between Palestinians youths and Israeli police in other neighborhoods of occupied Jerusalem. One Palestinian teenager was killed in the clashes in Silwan.
