Silwan, Jerusalem (SILWANIC)

The detention of Silwan resident Khaled al-Zeer was unilaterally extended by prison authorities today when they refused to release him to house arrest as sentenced by the Magistrates Court. The family of al-Zeer, 36, was ordered to post his bail of 2,000 NIS to secure his release but discovered that al-Zeer had been re-arrested by prison guards upon order of his release.

Al-Zeer has been accused by prison officials of assaulting a guard whilst in detention. He was arrested yesterday, 17 May, under allegation of assaulting a settler during an attempted annexation of Palestinian land in Wadi Rababa.

Israeli prison guards are commonly known for their maltreatment of Palestinian prisoners, with many inmates assaulted and deprived of basic human rights whilst in detention.
