Silwan, Jerusalem (SILWANIC)
The Israeli police officer responsible for the physical assault of Wadi Hilweh Popular Committee member Ahmed Qaraeen yesterday is well known in the Silwan community for his antagonism of Palestinian residents.

The officer in question is known for controlling traffic at the entrance to Wadi Hilweh outside the archaelogical settlement City of David, commonly stopping Palestinian vehicles for no reason other than to search or harass them. Israeli settlers driving in Silwan, however, go unchecked despite their common flouting of road rules. In one recent incident, the officer attempted to attack a Palestinian driver for refusing to give right of way to a settler driving in the wrong direction on a one-way street.

The officer is also notorious for his derogatory and offensive language used when addressing Palestinians. Several residents who have objected to his remarks have since been arrested on fabricated allegations lodged by the officer.
