Rafah – PNN – The Palestinian interior ministry in Gaza announced on Wednesday that the Rafah crossing reopened due to an agreement that had been reached with the Egyptian authorities on Wednesday.
According to the interior ministry, travel will be allowed for those who register their names one week in advance. The ministry encouraged people to stick to the lists secured by the Egyptian side to ensure easy and comfortable travel.
Egypt decided to open the Rafah crossing last week after closing it for four years under the rule of ousted-president Hosni Mubarak. The opening came after Palestinian factions reconciled in Cairo last month.
Earlier this week Egypt decided to close the crossing after the Egyptian authorities said they caught weapons being smuggled through the terminal. The Egyptian move drew protests by Palestinian travelers stranded on both sides of the border.
