GAZA, (PIC)– Palestinian citizens in the Gaza Strip denied new passports by the authorities in Ramallah staged a protest sit-in on Monday in front of the UN offices in Gaza city.

They carried placards denouncing the decision, which they said, was based on political affiliation. They asked the UN to intervene and end their plight especially when some of them are sick and need to travel for treatment.

A committee of those citizens said that it organized this sit-in as part of a series of rallies to protest their condition and to assert the right of each and every citizen to acquire a passport.

Committee statistics indicate that more than 30,000 Palestinian citizens in the Strip are deprived of obtaining passports.

Universal Declaration of Human Rights states:

UDHR 15:1  “Everyone has the right to a nationality”
UDHR 13:1  “Everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each state”
UDHR 13:2  “Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country”

Not issuing passports is a limitation (besides the already existing travel and movement restrictions for Palestinians) to exercise these Human Rights even in cases of medical emergency etc.
