JEDDAH, (PIC)– Secretary General of the Organization for Islamic Cooperation Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu has made contacts with a number of British government officials asking for the release of Sheikh Raed Salah, the leader of the Islamic movement in 1948 occupied Palestine.

An OIC press release on Monday said that Ihsanoglu was holding contacts with various officials to allow Sheikh Salah to complete his tour of the UK, which was interrupted by his detention by the British authorities at security pretexts.

The statement said that the OIC would continue its good offices in this regard in another meeting with a British official soon.

Sheikh Salah travelled to the UK to attend the Palestine Day events organized by the Palestinian Forum in Britain and to deliver a number of speeches and lectures topped by an address at the House of Commons and a lecture at the University of Leicester.
For its part, the Arab League issued a statement calling on Britain to release Sheikh Salah and to respect him in his capacity as a religious scholar.
The League expressed indignation at the detention of Sheikh Salah since he did not enter the country illegally and his itinerary was announced for all.
