Ramallah – PNN – UFree Network, a European wide organisation which campaigns for the rights of Palestinian prisoners, has reported that Nelly Safadi a 35 year old from Nablus, was finally released by Israeli authorities this week after being detained for 22 months in an Israeli prison.
Safadi was first arrested at an Israeli checkpoint between her hometown of Nablus and Ramallah. She faced extreme hardship while detained often being deprived of family visits. The release itself had already been delayed due to the cancellation of ‘Amenhala’.Her husband Bilal, who is blind, is also currently being detained in an Israeli prison. He was arrested just forty days after his marriage and has since spent nine years in prison, much of that time in isolation.
Safadi’s release comes after intense campaigning by human rights organisation UFree. The campaign for Safadi’s release was launched at UFree’s inaugural conference in Geneva in March.
UFree in a press release this week stated their hope that the release of Nelly Safadi will lead to the further release of another 35 women currently being held captive in Israeli prisons; many of whom are subjected to cruel and inhumane treatment. Of particular concern to UFree is the plight of Ahlam Tamimi, who has been given a life sentence sixteen times.
