RAMALLAH, (PIC)– The families of the West Bank political prisoners have called for releasing their loved ones for the Ramadan holidays as the post-reconciliation persecution of Hamas’s men in the West Bank continues.

They said in a joint press statement on Saturday that they wished to “turn the page on the sensitive and sad issue forever”.

The statement was directed at Hamas political leader Khalid Mishaal and Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the Palestinian Authority which governs the West Bank. It called on them to meet soon in Cairo and finalize the implementation of the unity deal signed by Hamas and Fatah in May.

It also called on them to reject foreign pressure, a major contributor to the reconciliation impasse.

The reconciliation deal signed by the parties governing the split Palestinian territories conditioned the release of all prisoners taken for political reasons.

Recently, Palestinian Authority security agencies summoned three men for political reasons in Idhna in Al-Khalil province for questioning as the political persecution of Hamas’s men in the West Bank continues despite the reconciliation deal.

Elements from those agencies also arrested the brother of a current political prisoner who joined a sit-in against political persecution on Thursday.
