Hanin Zuabi has been suspended from all parliamentary activityAn Arab member of the Israeli parliament (Knesset) has been barred from carrying out her duties as a lawmaker for her participation in a Gaza-bound aid flotilla last year.

On Monday, the Knesset’s Ethnics Committee suspended Hanin Zuabi from all parliamentary activity until the end of the current summer session, which ends in two weeks, Xinhua reported.

The committee said Zuabi’s pro-Palestinian initiative had been a threat to Israel’s ‘security.’

The MK had boarded the Mavi Marmara, the lead vessel of the Freedom Flotilla, which had set sail for the Israeli-blockaded Gaza Strip, carrying thousands of tons of humanitarian aid.

She became an outspoken critic of Israel after Israeli commandos attacked the ship and killed nine Turkish activists on May 31, 2010.

She has described the Israeli attack as ‘an act of pirates,’ and denounced the Israeli regime as one that ‘cultivates a culture of criminality.’

Zuabi had already been stripped of her parliamentary privileges.

She described the ban as a political punishment imposed by a racist far-right majority in the Knesset.
