RAMALLAH, (PIC)– The Israeli Askalan prison administration carried Palestinian prisoner Atef Wreidat to the Ramle prison hospital with both his hands and feet shackled after his health condition worsened.
The Palestinian prisoner’s association said in a statement on Tuesday that Wreidat, 45, was on hunger strike since 12 June to protest medical neglect and repression against him ever since his detention ten years ago.
It noted that Wreidat suffered from a number of serious diseases such diabetes, hypertension, and heart ailment, and has been in need of an open heart surgery for over a year.
The association held the Israeli prison service (IPS) responsible for the life of Wreidat, stressing that continued neglect of his condition reflected the IPS policy of killing sick detainees.
It said that the Askalan prison administration imposed a series of penal measures against the prisoner including holding him in isolation despite knowledge of his condition.
Wreidat, a Fatah cadre, was first captured by Israel in 1982 while only 16 years old and sentenced to 11 years in jail. He was released in 1993 then detained anew during the Aqsa intifada after two years of chase and sentenced to 11 years and 3 months.
