Ufree slams Israel’s continued detention of Palestinian mayor’s daughter

OSLO, (PIC)– The European network to support the rights of Palestinian prisoners (Ufree) has expressed strong condemnation after an Israeli court extended the detention of the daughter of Jamal al-Tawil, the mayor of Al-Beira near the West Bank city of Ramallah.

In a statement, Ufree, which is headquartered in Oslo, called what was happening to the 17-year-old ”an attempt to use her to pressure and extort her father”.

The Ashkelon court ruled Monday to extend Bushra’s period of detention for another eight days.

Ufree described the detention as a blatant violation of international law, which has forbidden the detention of minors. She has already been held for two weeks.

Ufree called on the Red Cross and other human rights organizations to urgently intervene, expressing special concern over Israel’s interrogation methods.

An Israeli force raided the Tawil residence in Al-Beira on 6/7/2011 and confiscated books and personal items. The force took Bushra in for questioning.

Ufree also reminded of what Palestinian females experience in Israeli prisons, including harassment, strip searches, fines, deliberate medical neglect, deprivation of visitation rights, and isolation.
